Why You Don’t Have to Pretend to Be OK When You Come to Church

When you walk through the doors of church, do you feel isolated because you have to cover up the real you? Pastor DawnChere Wilkerson at VOUS Church in Miami says it shouldn’t be that way.

“A lot of times we try to Photoshop the bruises of our life away; we try to walk through the doors in our nice clothes with a smile on our face,” Wilkerson says. “Meanwhile, our heart is broken, our life may feel like it’s in complete chaos. We may feel completely isolated and alone. …

“I don’t know what kind of church you grew up in or what message of the gospel that has been presented to you in the past, but I want to tell you right now that that is not the message of the gospel. The message of the gospel is that we serve a God who wants you to bring your mess to His miracle-working hands.”

At the same time, Wilkerson says, we need to watch our actions and be sure we’re ready for the day we stand before God and are held accountable for what we’ve done on this earth.

“I sure hope that we’re giving the gift and the totality of our love day to day, because there’s gonna come a day where we stand before God … and the only thing that will remain are the things that we did out of a heart of love,” Wilkerson says.
