How One Key Conservative State Helped Spark Donald Trump’s Rise to the Presidency

Rev. Ray Moore can’t personally vouch for Donald Trump’s faith in Christ. What Ray does know is that God is sovereign, therefore He must have His reasons for allowing Trump to become the 45th president of the United States.

“Sometimes, God just brings a leader along that doesn’t fit the mold, and Donald Trump was that man,” said Ray, a Baptist pastor for over 40 years who has also been involved in public policy issues and Republican politics in his home state of South Carolina since the 1980s. “I really believe this is the man God has chosen for this hour. He has taken up the cause of Christianity, something that has been sorely needed in this country for quite some time.”

In my new book God and Donald Trump, which released Nov. 7, Ray explains how South Carolina played a huge factor in Trump securing the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2016. As I chronicle in the book, in every presidential election except one since 1980, the winner of the South Carolina Republican primary has gone on to win the GOP nomination.

And because evangelicals make up 58 percent of South Carolina’s electorate, it wasn’t likely that Trump would win the state’s primary over Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio, a pair of candidates who were much more publicly forthright about their faith. Moore himself usually voted for the strongest pro-life candidate and preferred candidates with a strong Christian witness, so he intended to back Cruz.

Through a series of circumstances and a chat with South Carolina political consultant and publicist Ed McMullen, a long-time friend of Trump’s, Moore became convinced to lean Trump’s way. With Rubio and Cruz splitting a big chunk of the evangelical support, Trump was able to win South Carolina with 32 percent of the vote.

Moore says Trump’s victory was the result of a series of political “miracles.” Trump’s first national endorsement came from then-South Carolina Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster, whom Moore has known for more than 30 years. McMaster went on to become South Carolina’s governor when Trump appointed previous governor Nikki Haley as ambassador to the United Nations.
