Why Jesus Wants You to Become a Vessel for the Holy Spirit

What does it mean to be used by God, and how do the gifts of the Holy Spirit operate?

Jesus said in John 14:12, “Truly, truly I say to you, he who believes in Me will do the works that I do also. And he will do greater works than these, because I am going to My Father.”

Learning to become a vessel for the Holy Spirit through signs, wonders and miracles transforms our lives and allows us to carry on the works that Jesus did, just as we are called to do as disciples of Christ.

The Scripture teaches us exactly what it means to become a vessel for the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:38 says “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

In order to become a vessel, we must first understand what God anointed Jesus to do through the power of the Holy Ghost. Notice that when the text says he went about “doing good,” it is referring to Jesus “healing all who were oppressed by the devil.”

This is precisely what Jesus called His disciples to do and what we too are called to do. The evidence of this is shown consistently throughout Scripture. In Mark 3, we can see that the Twelve Disciples were not only called forth to preach the gospel but also to be used for signs, wonders and miracles.

Furthermore, Matthew 10:1 says, “He called His twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.”

This was the commission of the Twelve, and we later see in Luke’s gospel that not only were the Twelve commissioned, but later on, the 70 were also commissioned to move forward in the spirit to lay hands on the sick, cast out devils and be used for the supernatural.

Particularly, the Great Commission was later shown to us in Mark’s Gospel. It was not only that we should go forth and preach the gospel (Mark 16:15); Jesus said in verses 17-18, “These signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

My dear friends, the Holy Spirit is not given just so that we can speak in an unknown tongue. But rather, speaking in an unknown tongue is a sign of being filled with the Spirit that was given, so we would continue the works of Jesus.
