Psychological Warfare and How to Defend Yourself

You don’t have to tell me twice to pick up my prophetic sword to wreak havoc on the kingdom of darkness. For most prophets, this is our happy place. This is why, when the enemy tries to get us down, he uses the kind of warfare we don’t see coming.

We see the attacks from without. We recognize the rejections. We are savvy when it comes to recognizing the attacks on our finances or health! What trips us up though is the kind of spiritual warfare that is counter insurgent: psychological warfare!

What Psychological Warfare Looks Like

Craig and I had recently broken relationship with our spiritual father. It didn’t go as smoothly as we’d hoped, and for months afterward I couldn’t find peace. I tossed and turned at night, feeling the weight of guilt on me. In my mind, I kept going over how I had failed.

It wasn’t until I experienced a crushing blow while ministering that I truly began to seek God for answers. We were hosting a prophetic training event where I was one of the main speakers. Right in the middle of teaching, guilt gripped me so strongly that I could barely conclude my message. It took every bit of willpower in that moment for me not to walk away from the podium in the middle of my message. I had never felt so defeated in all my life. I knew I needed help … and I needed it right in that moment!

Definition of Psychological Warfare

These strongholds are so sneaky because we find our own voices ringing in our ears: words of accusation, fears of consequences we are about to face. The worst is guilt that grips us so badly, we never want to be used by God ever again. And that right there, people, is why this warfare is kryptonite for the prophet!

So, after nearly being undone by this warfare, I dove into the Word seeking answers. God showed up. He didn’t teach me to fight. Rather, He taught me to stand. That day I discovered the knowledge of who He is within me. It is why this particular Scripture is never far from my lips.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NKJV) says, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

Plot twist: Psychological warfare doesn’t require you to pick up your sword. Instead, you’ll beat the devil with your shield!
