Prayer Burdens and Alerts: Part 4

In several earlier blogs, I wrote about three ways we can receive prayer alerts and burdens—through an inner knowing, through an inner witness and through the revelation gifts. The fourth way we can receive these prayer alerts, or assignments, is through scripture. I have experienced this many times. The Spirit and the Word agree so it makes sense that the Holy Spirit sometimes will bring a scripture passage to mind, and give us enlightenment through that scripture, so that we understand what we need to pray for on behalf of a person, city or nation.

I always prayed over my kids at night as they were going to bed. One night, when I laid my hands on one of my daughters and began to pray for her, I heard on the inside of me the words, “Don’t be anxious about tomorrow,” which made me think of what Jesus said in Matthew 6:34 (NKJV): “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” In the passage just prior to this verse, Jesus talked about the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, saying that God’s care for such fleeting things should encourage us that His care for us is much greater (see Matthew 6:25–33).

When the Holy Spirit brought this scripture to mind, I knew my daughter was struggling with worry and anxiety and that God was giving me an assignment to pray for her. From that day forward, I interceded for my daughter to have victory over that struggle and though it was a years-long battle, she did gain the victory. I am so thankful God gave me that prayer alert and that He helped me understand what to do.

It would have been easy to think that verse had just popped into my head randomly and to pay it no mind. But God planted that thought in my mind to get my attention that day. If I had ignored it, I would have missed out on a crucial, spiritual battle in my child’s life. It is important that we pay attention when passages of scripture come to mind. It is also important to read the Bible regularly because if we lack Bible familiarity, we will have a hard time hearing and understanding when the Holy Spirit speaks to us in that way.

God loves using the scripture to give us prayer burdens or alerts. I challenge you to begin expecting God to give you scriptures. Those scriptures are little nuggets of truth to show you things to come and what’s going on in the spiritual realm. If you are paying attention, He will show you these things so that you can pray about it, pray against it and speak the Word of God over it. What an incredible privilege to partner with God in bringing His will on earth. {eoa}
