The Key to Ministering to Trauma Victims

Resolution

It is often necessary for personal ministry to take place regarding traumatic moments. I personally believe this should be part of the ministry of the church.

I do not think professionals should be the only ones helping others break free from a traumatic past. Often, it simply takes a loving friend with compassion and knowledge to walk them into freedom.

The key in ministering to trauma—with the goal of long-term freedom—involves bringing the person to resolution. When resolution occurs, the person remembers the experience but is no longer tormented by it.

The power of those tormenting memories can be broken first by addressing the spiritual tormentors that came in at the traumatic moment; they are the ones who came in to keep the torment intact. Removing these “back seat drivers” gives the person room to receive the love of God and develop a renewed perspective on life.

In ministering to trauma, our goal has never been to make the person forget the event or erase it from their memory. The goal is to remove the torment and inward conflict over the event. Remembering the event without the torment gives the person the ability to express their testimony of what God has done in their life to set them free. The testimony of the believer is one of the core weapons we have to defeat the enemy’s work.

In addressing traumas, the power of forgiveness is imperative. Those who wronged us or failed to love and protect us must be forgiven, or we will never be free from our past. Without forgiveness, there will never be proper healing of the past.

In addition, the love of Father God needs to be understood so that perfect love can invade us in power. Coming out of agreement with what the enemy brought in is a very key component of walking out of the bondage. This involves repenting and turning from fear, rejection, self-hatred, guilt and whatever else seems to still be in operation. Each one needs to be removed in the power of the Holy Spirit. {eoa}
