Psalm 22:1-18 The psalms David wrote were directed by the Holy Spirit, who knows the future. David was inspired by the Holy Spirit in this psalm to prophetically write about Jesus’ death and His mission on earth. We know that as Jesus was dying on the cross, He cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?” Jesus was quoting from this psalm. David writes in this psalm about the piercing of His hands and feet. We know this did not happen to David, but it did happen to Jesus Christ. David in the spirit saw the scene of the cross, and he recorded what he saw and heard.
David continues to describe this dramatic scene in verses 14-18: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture” (KJV).
None of these things happened to David, so we know he was speaking of Jesus Christ. Why did God forsake Jesus? He had purer eyes than to behold evil, and when Jesus became sin for us, the Father had to turn away from Jesus. As Jesus was poured out like water, He drank from the cup He asked the Father to remove from Him when He agonized in the garden. This cup was the cup of God’s wrath, and He drank this for all of us so that we would not be appointed to wrath. Jesus became the perfect drink offering as well as the perfect Lamb of God slain for us from the foundation of the earth.
Lord, I can only bow my knees in thanksgiving for what You did for me on the cross. Because You became sin for me, I will never have to face God’s wrath. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
