We are told that we must listen to God’s voice when we need to make important decisions. What does the Bible say about hearing God’s voice? How do we apply this to our everyday lives?

7 Bible Verses About Hearing God’s Voice

  • “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17, NKJV).
  • “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27).
  • “He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God” (John 8:47).
  • “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left” (Isa. 30:21).
  • “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…” (2 Tim. 3:16).
  • “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion” (Heb. 3:15).
  • “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jer. 33:3).

These verses tell us that God’s voice is closely connected and heard through His Word. They also tell us that His voice guides, answers and reveals. Hearing God’s voice is important and critical to every believer who wants to move into new levels of faith and fulfill their divine destiny.

6 Ways to Open Your Heart and Mind to God’s Voice

  1. Read Scripture: There is no better way to receive spiritual inspiration than to spend time reading and reflecting on Scripture. Second Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
  2. Look for confirmation: This could mean you have multiple people within a short amount of time speak words that resonate within you as if they are answering prayer. This is likely no accident. Matthew 18:16 says, “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.”
  3. Trust His timing in the circumstances: Does it ever seem like something has happened in your life that is far too perfect or fitting to be a complete circumstance? Often, God gets our attention through circumstances because He has something important to say. Rather than trying to “get through” or “shrug off” a situation, ask Him what He is saying to you through it.
  4. Pray and meditate: Sometimes, taking a few moments out of your day to pray and meditate can provide the clarity you would not otherwise be able to achieve. It is at these moments that you can hear the voice of God.
  5. Go where God speaks to you: Perhaps, for example, you feel more spiritually “in tune” when you are outside, in the woods, at the beach, etc. Or you might have a quiet spot in your home where you enjoy relaxing and reflecting. Location can significantly affect our ability to hear God’s voice.
  6. Eliminate distractions: Spend some time away from technology and other distractions. Let yourself better focus on what God is saying to you.

After you hear God’s voice, look up scriptures that verify and solidify what He is saying to you. Then start making declarations and decrees in the courts of heaven from these verses.

The Word of God is powerful and sharp. The sword cuts through lies and gives you the edge in battle. If you are facing a major decision or simply want to hear God’s voice in the everyday, start with these six tips. Record how God speaks to you and begins to establish your steps day by day.

You are about to embark on a great adventure in transforming your faith!
