Often, the simplest way to find your calling, your purpose in the Lord, is to just say, “Yes.” Whatever presents itself to you as a need that you can meet, say, “Yes, Lord, I’ll do it.” And then do it, and don’t look back.
We see this principle at work in the life of the apostle Paul. He shared the gospel wherever there was an opportunity to do it. And he never quit. He just kept going. Even when life threw hardships at him, he kept moving forward. He faced shipwrecks, beatings, imprisonments and more, but he kept pressing ahead. And lives were turned around for good and for God.
Through God’s power, we can take the suffering that the devil means for evil and see it turned around for good to bless others. The very things that the Lord has delivered us from often form the roots of our calling in Him. I am motivated to bring healing to the sick, because not only have I battled sickness in my youth, but I spent my entire life watching my father praying for the sick. I know what it is like to be sick, and I don’t want others to suffer—especially not when Jesus is our healer!
My friend, Bill Wilson, founder of Metro World Child, knows what it is like to be abandoned. At the age of 12, Bill was left on a street corner in New York City by an alcoholic mother who couldn’t take care of him. Moving from that place of desperation to reaching some 250,000 children around the world each week for the Lord may seem impossible, but with God’s help, Bill makes it seem easy. He knows firsthand the power of seeing a need and saying yes to it.
Bill was inspired to help children as a direct result of his own experience. He was helped by a Christian who saw him on the street and asked him if he needed anything. We all can do the same. Like Jesus, we can respond to the needs we see and bring His light and life into the situation to bring about good.
“The need is the call,” says Bill. “The man who picked me up off the street had every reason not to stop. But he did.”
Through that Christian man’s intervention, Bill gave his life to the Lord, found a place to stay and graduated school. Bill began driving a van to pick up children and take them to church. Those early, humble days turned into a major bus ministry and other outreaches to children who need God’s love in their lives.
“So often, big doors open on very small hinges,” Bill said. “It’s the little things that God puts in front of us. If you’re astute enough, if you’re quick enough to see that need, you can fill it.”
You may be thinking, What difference can I make? I’m just an ordinary person. But all of us are extraordinary in the Lord. We walk and operate in the power of His might—which can bring about miracles!
“I know that one person can make a difference,” Bill said. “I am the result. I am the result of one ordinary Christian who just saw the boy that nobody wanted.”
You can make a difference too. God has called you to be a light to your family, your school, your workplace and your community. Look for the needs around you and bring Jesus to those needs, and see what gets turned around for good.
