2 Corinthians 2:9-17 One of my favorite things to do when I was a child was to lick the bowl after my mother made homemade fudge or lace cookies. I savored the flavor as I first used a spoon to scoop the leftover batter, and then I would use my tongue to make sure I had not missed one morsel. I savored the flavor.
Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, speaks of every Christian as the sweet savor of Christ to God. He says, “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish. To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?” (vv. 14-16, KJV).
Webster’s defines savor as “that quality of something which acts on our sense of taste or smell.” As representatives of Jesus Christ in the world we should transmit to others both a sweet smell and a good taste. We are the salt of the earth, and if you have ever tasted a dish with no salt added, you know how important salt is. Salt enhances the flavor of things and also preserves them. As the salt of the earth we need to enhance the flavor of this world. People around us, whether saved or not saved, should be attracted to our flavor. There should be such a contagious joy and peace in our lives that people want to hang around us and savor the flavor of Christ in our lives. Some may even ask such questions as, “Why are you so joyful?” “Why do you have such peace when every thing is this world seems to be falling apart?” “What is the reason for your hope?”
When we enter a room of people, we should bring the sweet odor of the presence of the Lord with us. I’ll never forget the time I took my mother to a women’s retreat. Her favorite perfume was Tea Rose. One morning as we took our seats for the morning talk, a lady in front of us said, “The presence of the Lord truly is here, and He smells just like roses.” We did not say a word because we did not want to burst her bubble. People, however, should be able to smell the presence of the Lord wherever we go, and they should be able to taste and see that the Lord is good as we share the good things He has done in our lives.
Lord, may those I see today savor the flavor of the life of Christ within me. May others desire to taste every morsel of Your Word as I share with them.
