Whom Do You Seek?

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? —John 18:4

Jesus knew all that was to come. He asked this question not because He was wondering what was happening, but to reveal whom they sought. The soldiers came to arrest one they thought was a fleeing peasant but found themselves confronted by the Commander-in-chief of a heavenly army.

The Greek phrase “I am he” comes from two Greek words. In Exodus 3:14 this phrase is expressed as “I AM who I AM” and is taken from the word YHWH, which means “Ever Present.” Jesus declared His deity in John 8:58 when He said, “Before Abraham was, I AM” and again to the soldiers in the Garden of Gethsemane. The very power of the words, “I am He” hurled them backwards (v. 6). The soldiers did not take Jesus captive any more than Jesus lost His life. He gave it willingly for all mankind.

Seek the ever-present God of the universe for who He is-.-.-.-not for what He can do for you. Desire the Giver-.-.-.-not the gifts. Seek His face and His presence, knowing that in His presence you will be changed.

Jesus, I desire Your presence in my life.
I know that I cannot be or do anything without You.
Keep me close to You. Amen.
