God’s Friend

Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. —JAMES 2:23

Abraham was called the “Friend of God,” because he believed God and willingly obeyed His direction. As born-again believers, we are already made righteous, and if we are obedient from hearts that seek to love Him, we too will be called “friends” by our Father in heaven. But if we obey God out of religious traditions, we cannot be His friend. Friendship is what religion is not. Religion is a ritual, but friendship is relationship. God’s desires a relationship with us, not empty religious ritual.

Friendships are not built on fear, duty, or legalism. Instead, they are built on mutual love, respect, and trust which says, “I trust you not to do anything to hurt me. I trust you have my best interest at heart.” When we trust God, it’s easy to obey Him.

Jesus no longer calls us servants but friends, and He will make all things known to us. Jesus tells His disciples: “Greater love hath no man that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you” (John 15:13-15).

Jesus, You are my best friend. I obey You not for what
You will do for me but because I love you so very much.
Thank You for calling me Your friend. Amen.
