The Role the Church Must Play in Intercessory Prayer

Romans 8:26 says, “Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

There is a deep place of intercessory prayer that is foundational to the function and purpose of the church in every generation. Paul’s description of prayer in Romans 8:26 provides a picture of what’s available to those who are willing to align their hearts and lives with God’s eternal agenda.

The need for intercession is great in this hour. Sadly, the church has become exceptional in doing good corporate meetings and weak when it comes to effective prayer. We are motivated by excellence, talent, production and the opinions of church attendees. However, none of these things will be effective when it comes to impacting the dark hour that we find ourselves in.

The history of revival can always trace the roots of great moves of God to intense, intercessory prayer. As we study the dynamics that surrounded divine outpourings such as the Welsh Revival of 1904, the Hebrides Revival of 1949, the Brownsville Revival of 1995 and so forth, we will always discover individuals who deliberately tethered their hearts to the heart of the Lord as they yielded their vessels to His eternal agenda.

The truth about intercession is that it is not an easy, passive experience. To embrace God’s heart means that we must be willing to be emptied of our personal agendas. We must understand that true intercession only emanates from a crucified life. Therefore, the sufferings of Christ must become native to the true intercessor.

Join me this week on Maintain the Flame on the Charisma Podcast Network as I share a message about the role of the church through intercession. To see what Jesus sees and to feel what He feels is always the seedbed from where a life of penetrating prayer that moves heaven and changes earth springs forth. As you listen to this week’s podcast, be prepared to be stirred deeply! {eoa}
