Not long ago, while I was preaching at New Beginnings Christian Church in Brick, New Jersey, we experienced an incredible move of God. I was preaching about revival, and the Holy Spirit told me three things.
First, He said, “There’s going to be a personal revival in and among My people, and that personal revival is going to be in their prayer closets. I’m going to anoint them with fresh oil” (see Matt. 6:6; Ps. 92:10).
Second, He said, “There’s going to be a revival in the corporate gatherings of My people. When My people come together, I’m going to manifest My glory. At times, My Spirit is going to be poured out to such a degree that My children will not be able to stand because of the glory.”
Third, He said, “There’s going to be a street revival. I want My people to go into the highways and the byways and compel the lost to come to Me. The secret of My power is in My hands, and My church is My hands. And they’re going to go forth and lay hands on the sick, and the sick are going to recover. There’s going to be signs and wonders and miracles.”
He summed up all of this by saying—”The momentum is going to take place because My people, first of all, enter into prayer.” Revival begins in the secret place. The Bible tells us that the prayers of the righteous have a powerful effect (see James 5:16) and that God turns around what the enemy meant for harm, and He uses it for our good (see Gen. 50:20). God is going to turn things around and make His intercessors a danger to the kingdom of darkness.
God longs for people to say yes to the ministry and mantle of intercession. We are familiar with the fivefold ministry—the apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers—but we also desperately need the ministry of intercession. This isn’t a glamorous ministry; it isn’t done from the stage. But the Father promises to reward those who seek Him in secret (see Matt. 6:5-6). To the intercessors who labor long in hiddenness, the Bible promises, “God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love” (Heb. 6:10a). The prayer of intercession is work, and it is a labor of love.
Many of us have grown strong in worship, and now God is calling us to battle. He’s calling us to rise up and lay hold of His will in prayer—calling Heaven down to earth. When we do this—praying and standing in the gap as intercessors—God promises to reward our secret labor with open reward. We may not see them on earth, but we are laying up treasures in heaven. And most importantly, in intercession, we will help birth God’s will and release His Kingdom on earth—God’s glory rushing from the prayer rooms to the stadiums of the world.
