The story of the Bible is the story of God’s plan to redeem mankind. Central to that story is the calling on the Jewish people found in God’s covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3.
A curious but key element to that covenant was the gift of the land of Canaan—a land Abraham never possessed but was promised to his descendants as an inheritance.
The land of Canaan was described as an “everlasting possession” because it was part of a covenant that was “everlasting” (Gen. 17:7-8). As long as God’s covenant with Abraham is in play, the land is the possession of the people of Israel.
Thousands of years later we find that piece of land highly controversial and some in the Christian world tend to brush the importance of the land aside. They may say the land is no longer necessary, or the Jewish people forfeited the right to the land when they did not accept Jesus’ messianic credentials. We must understand God’s original intention in the gift of this land to understand its significance and meaning today.
Why would He include land in His covenant with Abraham and why the land of Canaan? Is that promise still valid today? What lessons can we draw from the land of Canaan for our lives and walk with the Lord?
