Crushing the Barrier Between You and God

Have you ever felt like there is a wall between you and God? One of my favorite songs, as a high-schooler stated that I could run through the troops and leap over walls (Psalm 18:29). However, reality can hit hard, and I can feel like I hit that wall just as hard. Without any spring in my step, there is nothing that will catapult me over the wall. I confess that at times I want to wave the white flag of surrender rather than risk walking through the troops in front of me.

How should you respond when it feels like someone, or something has become a barrier between you and God?

The first thing to do is to ensure that our belief system is based on Scriptural truth rather than our personal feelings, culture, or life experiences. Galatians 5:24 reminds us that our sinful nature is crucified if we belong to Jesus Christ. This means that there is a stronger voice that we must begin to listen to and obey.

Think about this. If Jesus had listened to his flesh, would he have gone to the cross? Of course not. In fact, Jesus asked God if He could avoid the cross (Mark 14:35-36). Jesus had honest conversations with the Father but always stepped into the will of the Father. It can be easy to see Jesus as the son of God and forget that he “felt” as humans do. Jesus had to wrestle through the feelings and find the joy set before him (Heb. 12:2) to make the journey to the cross step by step.

As believers, we must learn to crucify our fleshly desires, which is easier said than done, but it is possible. Jesus modeled it for us, and we can follow his example. And, as you follow his example, that wall will come down, or you will jump right over it with a mighty leap. And that demonic army trying to intimate you and hold you back will lose its power and authority, and you will walk right through.
