In an I Am Second film, Danny Gokey shares the story of how God helped him overcome grief from the death of his first wife, Sophia. During their first year of marriage, she had heart surgery, and it wasn’t successful. When she passed away, Gokey questioned God, but then he remembered his promise to Sophia that he’d audition for American Idol. So he did, and although it was hard, people who watched the show were touched by God through his life.
“There were so many people who had written me on social media and wrote me letters,” Gokey says. “One lady said she was going to take her life, but she heard my story on American Idol, she heard me crying in a different room, and she decided to put her gun down and then give her life to the Lord. … One of the most profound things that I’ve learned in my walk with Christ is that He is enough.”
