The Hamster Wheel

Hamster wheel
Every time I see a hamster on a wheel, I am reminded to consider my ways in leadership.

I wonder if the hamster knows he’s not making progress? Does Doodle the hamster (yes, I really did Google names for a hamster) jump on his wheel in the way his caregiver might spin a treadmill?

The hamster wheel has become an over-used analogy for work. The question that begs for an answer is “Why don’t you get off the wheel and do something?” That’s certainly a nice way to ask that question, isn’t it?

Effective leaders know the wheel is not leverage for growth. There is no end in mind. We need to keep our team pedaling.

What does it take to get a hamster off his wheel? Food? Stimulus? Doodle must wait for a big hand to reach into his ecosystem and end his spin.

We only need to lift our hands and ask for God’s hand to reach into our cubicle with His fresh anointing. Seek Him first today.

“Jesus, help me jump off my wheel. Touch me with daily bread. Help me to see what has always been beyond my wheel. Help me to be a better follower of Jesus.”

He has big plans for us today.

“See, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not be aware of it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert” (Is. 43:19).
