With their new album, Welcome to the Masquerade, Thousand Foot Krutch say it is time we take off the masks and be willing to admit how we truly feel and what we’re going through.
“We all wear masks,” says frontman Trevor McNevan. “We hide what we don’t want people to know we’re thinking or feeling. And that’s easy to get away with when life is so busy. A lot of times, we have no idea what’s really going on in the life of the person right beside us.”
The band learned this when fans shared their stories.
“We’ll meet kids who feel so bottled up,” McNevan explains. “They’ve tried to relay their personal struggles or family issues to someone, but keep getting that generic, ‘It’ll be OK, just look the other way,’ pat on the back. There has to be a way of getting that stuff off your chest.”
With this new album, the band helps listeners express their feelings honestly. “Bring Me to Life” is a cry to be free —and a message to those telling lies: “Just shut it if you’re talkin’ to me.”
“Scream” is a reaction from someone who just wants to feel something. “E for Extinction” transitions from a low-key ballad intro and then explodes into a full-blown rock chorus. This song talks about how we camouflage ourselves.
Easily, this band could have resorted to singing with angst and anger. But Thousand Foot Krutch are honest and forthcoming, and yet they leave the madness out of it. Those who like rock ‘n’ roll and screaming vocals (though not overdone), are sure to want to add this album to their collection.
