Abby Johnson’s Journey From Former Planned Parenthood Director to Pro-Life Activist

by | Mar 1, 2021 | Culture

On a recent episode of Make Life Matter on the Charisma Podcast Network, I sat down with former Planned Parenthood director turned pro-life activist, Abby Johnson, to talk about her dramatic transformation, her pro-life advocacy and ways we can help end abortion and bring healing to women.

“I worked for Planned Parenthood for eight years of my life. I was a clinic director there,” Johnson says. She shared how a dramatic turn of events ended with her quitting her job. “I left in 2009 after witnessing a live, ultra-sound guided abortion procedure where I witnessed a 13-week-old baby fight and struggle for his life against the abortion instruments.

“I knew then that there was life in the womb—that there was humanity in the womb—and that I was on the wrong side of the abortion debate.

“Ultimately, seeing that child fight for his life when I had been told by Planned Parenthood that babies in the womb had no sensory development and could not feel anything, and then seeing clearly that this baby could feel what was happening to him. I knew that I had been lied to and because I had so eagerly believed the lies of the abortion industry, I then in turn, lied to thousands of other women who had come into my facility.

“I knew I had to leave,” she says.

Since then, Johnson has made it her goal to speak out against the abortion industry. She says she wants “to expose what’s taking place inside of these abortion facilities, but also trying to bring about healing to those who have been hurt and touched by abortion.” She continues, “Part of that ministry is getting abortion workers out of the abortion industry. Our ultimate goal is to help them into a relationship with Jesus Christ.”

About Our Guest:

Abby Johnson is the founder and director of And Then There Were None. Abby worked for Planned Parenthood for eight years, working her way up through the ranks to become the clinic director in Bryan, Texas. She was Planned Parenthood’s Employee of the Year in 2008, but she walked away from her job after witnessing the abortion of a 13-week-old fetus during an ultrasound-guided abortion. She left Planned Parenthood and instantly became a national news headline for her defection, which led to a pro-life speaking career. In 2012, she founded And Then There Were None, the only ministry in the nation that helps abortion workers leave their jobs and find new ones out of the industry. To date, she has helped over 600 abortion workers quit. She also founded ProLove Ministries and LoveLine in the fall of 2019. Her bestselling book, Unplanned, was made into a feature film that debuted in theaters nationwide March 2019 under the same name, and she is the host of the podcast Politely Rude. She and her husband, Doug, have eight children.
