Legendary Music Executive Takes Readers Down the Rocky Road to Redemption

by | Mar 17, 2015 | Books

Award-winning music producer and former U.S. manager of the Beatles’ Apple Records, Ken Mansfield has partnered with esteemed biographer Marshall Terrill to examine the wretched excess, self-absorption, and miraculous redemption of music icons. Rock and a Heart Place (BroadStreet Publishing, May 1, 2015) traces the lives of rock stars and entertainment legends who wallowed in the decadence of both the high life and low life as they alternately experienced heaven and hell on earth.

“We all started our journeys with songs and stories that somewhere along the way turned into personal hymns and impassioned witness,” writes Mansfield. “We found our true Father in places we thought He would never visit, and though it was tough for a while, He led us safely out and we feel good about that now.”

Rock and a Heart Place is a raw, sensitive, and unforgettable journey of sex, drugs, and rock and roll to sweet salvation. Mansfield takes readers on a mesmerizing journey alongside members of some of music’s most iconic bands, including Kansas, Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Price, The Turtles, and The Byrds, just to name a few. Their recollections of the way things were offers an inside look into an intriguing and bizarre world and concludes with a revelation of God’s purpose for our lives.

“We have a new song to sing, and the testimonies we now share are much better than the back-of-the-tour-bus tales of long ago. Elvis left that empty building, and now God lives in our hearts and houses. Today the real Rock is what keeps our lives rolling, and we’re taking it to the streets. Yesterday seems so far away, but eternity is here to stay.”

Ken Mansfield‘s legendary career in the music industry began as a member of the Town Criers, a successful southern California folk group in the early 1960s. From there he moved to executive tenures as US manager of The Beatles’ Apple Records, director at Capitol Records, vice president at MGM Records, and president at Barnaby/CBS Records. As a record producer, he was instrumental in launching country music’s “Outlaw” movement in the 1970s, producing Waylon Jennings’ number-one 1975 landmark recording, Are You Ready for the Country, and Jessi Colter’s number-one hit “I’m Not Lisa.

Mansfield also produced the Gaither Vocal Band’s 1991 GRAMMY® and Dove Award–winning Homecoming album, which also launched another historical movement, the resurgence of Southern gospel music via the Gaither Homecoming series of recordings, videos, and concerts. Ken is now an ordained minister, a sought-after speaker, and the author of four additional books: The Beatles, The Bible and Bodega BayThe White Book; Between Wyomings; and Stumbling on Open Ground. Ken and his wife, Connie live on the quiet shores of the Florida panhandle.
