In September, Rev. Patrick Conroy, chaplain for the U.S. House of Representatives, used his opening prayer to do spiritual warfare, casting out demonic spirits from Congress. He specifically prayed against the spirit of discouragement, the spirit of petty divisiveness and even sadness. A video of that bold prayer went viral.
Many didn’t understand Conroy’s prayer because they didn’t understand spiritual warfare. But what they don’t understand is spiritual warfare is at work in our nation—including the political arena—at all times.
With all the attacks on President Donald Trump, it’s easy to see how spiritual powers are involved. I did a podcast several weeks ago about the spiritual warfare at work within the impeachment, and the episode got over 120,000 downloads—the most-downloaded episode on my podcast in 2019.
This shows me that the people who listen to our podcast network and read our articles have a healthy understanding of what’s going on spiritually in our nation.
Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for our secularized culture. The Bible tells us we wrestle not against flesh and blood but instead against powers and principalities (see Eph. 6:13).
I think this passage aptly explains the hatred and animosity we’re seeing in our culture today.
And Conroy isn’t the only one to call it out. Paula White Cain, who was recently hired as head of the Trump administration’s Faith and Opportunity Initiative, also rebuked spirits of darkness during a prayer at Trump’s first rally for his re-election campaign. She called out “demonic networks,” by which of course the media immediately assumed she was referring to them. But Paula was merely using spiritual terminology to refer to what the devil and his demons are doing in our nation.
Spirit-led Christians have authority to do exactly what Conroy and Paula did. We don’t have to be pastors with a public platform to shift things in our country through prayer.
In our interview on The 700 Club, Robertson pointed out that the enemy’s primary weapon of choice is division.
“When we have unity, when they’re of one accord, when brothers dwell together in unity, there’s wonderful things that happen from that,” he said. “But we seem to be a nation divided.”
He says Paula is an example that you can’t even do spiritual warfare publicly without people getting offended.
Yet it’s important to realize that this intense spiritual warfare didn’t start when Trump was elected in 2016. If anything, Trump just exposed what was already going on. Instead, the enemy has been slowly chipping away at our nation’s moral compass for the last several decades.
Even the laws our nation has passed have moved us further away from our Judeo-Christian roots. That’s why I’m convinced Christians must rise up and stand in their spiritual authority to intercede for this nation.
“But what is it going to take to wake Christians up in America?” Robertson asked me.
As I told Robertson, things have to get pretty bad for people to wake up and make a difference. Things are already bad, and as a result, some are already awake to what’s going on—but not everyone. I hope we don’t have to become a fully socialist nation before Christians wake up, get serious and realize how badly we need to turn this ship around.
I talk more about this topic of spiritual warfare in my latest book, God, Trump, and the 2020 Election, which releases tomorrow. Be sure to grab your own copy at godtrump2020.com!
Pat Robertson, Gordon Robertson’s father and founder of the Christian Broadcast Network, offered some kind words about my book, which I want to share with you:
“Stephen Strang is a keen reporter, whose prose cuts like a laser into the troubled soul of America and exposes a condition where the elites of our nation have actually turned against it. He lays bare the delusion of the so-called progressives, who have steadfastly stood in opposition to our president and refuse to acknowledge any of the good work he has accomplished. God, Trump, and the 2020 Election is a must-read for evangelicals as they go to the polls in the 2020 election.”
In my book, I try to offer a spiritual and journalistic perspective of what’s at stake for the upcoming election. I share what could happen if Trump loses and why Christians must take a stand for what they know is right.
