YWAM Organizes Famine Relief in Africa’s Horn

ywam-acts-in-somalia-food-crisis_mediumWhile aid groups and political movements argue about the severity of the food crisis in the eastern Horn of Africa, it is clear to everyone that an overwhelming number of people are desperate for help in this region that has experienced two consecutive poor rainy seasons. The drought in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya has resulted in a humanitarian crisis worse than any seen for more than 60 years.

YWAM associates in east Africa have reported from the area that the crisis is worse in some areas than others. In parts of Kenya alone, drought victims number over 4 million—many of them are unreached tribal people, and 80 percent of the victims are women and children. In Somalia, the victims number around 3.7 million.

  • YWAM Sees Opportunity Amid the Crisis in Japan

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and tsunami which hit the northeastern part of Japan last week, reports from YWAM teams have been coming through describing the impact of the disaster and explaining how they are getting involved in the recovery process.

Cancelling all other plans, YWAM leaders in Japan decided to support the work of CRASHJapan, the official networking response of missions and churches in Japan to earthquakes and other natural disasters. It is an authorized ministry of the mission network, Japan Evangelical Missionary Association of which YWAM is a member. The aim of CRASH is “to equip Christians in Japan to be ready when disaster strikes to show the love of Jesus in practical and effective ways.”

Joining YWAM teams in Tokyo are a first response team from RescueNet US and volunteers from YWAM-initiated news network, GrassRoots News.

YWAM Organizes Arab World Prayer Gathering

prayerfrontuseThe winds of change are blowing strong across the diverse lands of the Arab World–the Middle East and North Africa. A lot has happened in the region recently, and what seemed insurmountable only a month ago, no longer stands today.

These events have caught the world by surprise, and the changes seem to be coming one after another at an unprecedented rate. History is being made daily as we sit and watch. Governments are nervous. The oppressed emboldened. Are God's people ready?

??In light of the recent events in Tunisia, Egypt and other Arab nations there are many groups positioning themselves to control the future of the region. What should we be doing? Are we content to sit back, wait and see what happens and take action when things have settled? Or do we believe we can stand up and steer the winds of change now, working with God to make history???

Digging Deep in the Mukubal of Angola

digging-deep-amongst-the-mukubal-of-angola_mediumSurvival in the southwestern corner of Angola is tough. Rocky hills and huge baobab trees litter the landscape. The land is stony and arid, and the low rainfall and intense heat means that few crops grow. The scarcity of water and vegetation means that the population remains low. Most people survive through a nomadic lifestyle, leading their cattle from place to place in search of water.

The challenge to survive in such a barren land has created tribes like the Mukubal. Nomadic cattle herders, they are tall, strong, and proud; warriors ready to defend their cattle. Living isolated from the cities they have remained virtually illiterate, and almost totally untouched by Christianity.
