Why These Scripture Passages Deeply Bothered Francis Chan

I was bothered the first time I read about God killing Uzzah just because he tried to keep the ark of the covenant from falling. Uzzah touched the ark because the cart it was riding on hit a pothole (2 Sam. 6). It seemed like a trivial mistake with good intentions. Sure, God had forbidden …

Francis Chan: Should the Church Function More Like a Gang?

We live in a time when people go to a building on Sunday mornings, attend an hour-long service, and call themselves members of the church. Does that sound shocking to you? Of course not. This is perfectly normal. It’s what we grew up with. We all know good Christians go to church. But have you …

Satan’s Dangerous Deception to Keep Christians Impotent

Lord, I don’t want to settle for the closeness I have with You now. I know there’s more—a lot more. I want more of Your Spirit’s closeness, more intimacy with You, more Christlike transformation, and more power in my life. I’m crying out for more of You, Jesus, for I know there is so much …

Don’t Worry, God Recalculates Your Life

I finally got a GPS. I’m probably the last person on earth to get one. But I just kept waiting for them to get cheaper until finally someone just gave me one. (That’s what pastors do, by the way. You talk about something and how much you wish you had it as an illustration, and …

  • Do You Unknowingly Reject God?

    Do You Unknowingly Reject God?

God doesn’t need us yet desperately wants us. Why, then, do we who need Him often not want Him in return? I was taught the song “Jesus Loves Me” as a young child: “Jesus loves me, this I know” Even if you didn’t grow up in a church, you probably know how it ends: “for the …

  • Francis Chan: ‘Forgotten God’

    Francis Chan: ‘Forgotten God’

chanFrancis Chan, author and the senior pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California, believes that Christians today do not fully embrace the power of the Holy Spirit; we're living half-filled. In his new book, Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit, Chan offers stories from those who have experienced real encounters with God. He says each of us has the choice every day "to depend on yourself, to live safely, and to try to control your life. Or you can live as you were created to live—as a temple of the Holy Spirit of God, as a person dependent on Him, desperate for God the Spirit to show up and make a difference."

The following is an excerpt from Forgotten God. (Click here to purchase this book.)

My hope and prayer for you is that church people don't try to normalize you. What I mean is that in American churches we often try to calm people down who are just too passionate or too sacrificial and radical. I know at times I have done this to other people. And I've had it done to me.
